How to Prepare for an MRI: What Patients Should Know

Updated December 10, 2025

Quick Summary

  • MRI uses no radiation
  • It shows exceptional detail of soft tissues, nerves, and joints
  • The exam is painless
  • Most MRI scans take 20–40 minutes
  • Knowing what to expect can make the experience much more comfortable

If your provider ordered an MRI, it’s completely normal to have questions — especially if you’ve never had one before. MRI is a safe, detailed imaging test that helps your care team see what’s happening inside your body.

This guide explains exactly how to prepare and what to expect so you can feel calm and confident on the day of your exam.

What Is an MRI?

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a powerful magnet and radio waves — not radiation — to produce highly detailed images of your body.

MRI is especially helpful for:

  • Spine pain (neck, mid-back, low back)
  • Joint injuries (shoulder, knee, hip, wrist)
  • Brain concerns: headaches, dizziness, stroke-like symptoms
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves

MRI takes longer than CT but offers exceptional detail for soft tissues.

What About Comfort During the MRI?

We understand that MRI can make some people feel anxious — especially if you’re sensitive to enclosed spaces or unfamiliar environments. Our technologists are here to guide you through the entire experience.

At our clinic:

  • Our MRI uses a wide, open-bore design to help reduce feelings of confinement
  • You’ll know exactly what to expect before the scan begins
  • Our technologists talk with you throughout the exam
  • You can stop the scan at any time if needed
  • There is no pain involved
  • Many patients tell us the exam was easier than they expected

If you’re ever unsure why a test was recommended or what will happen during the scan, our team is happy to answer any questions.
